Detection of static person

  • The pyroelectric infrared sensor detects changes in heat (infrared) emitted from the human body or other warm objects.
    In principle, a person who is completely static cannot be detected.

Detection of non-human body

  • Because animals, like human beings, emit heat (infrared), they may also be detected.
    If a robot or machine part starts moving, the sensor may detect a temperature change due to this and falsely trigger.

Detection direction

  • Dual element type has different sensitivity depending on the orientation of its mounting. Install in consideration of the direction of motion to be detected.
    Quad element type has sensitivity in both X axis and Y axis.
    In both Dual and Quad types, detection is difficult in the Z-axis direction which is toward the sensor.

Influence of heat source

  • Malfunction will occur in places exposed to steam and the heat from heating appliances such as stoves and cooking appliances.

Wind effect

  • Malfunction may occur in places exposed to rapidly moving air such as from an air conditioner or a room where outside air enters rapidly due to the opening or closing of a door or window.

Influence of shaking objects

  • In places with objects easily moved by air movement such as curtains or blinds, malfunctions may occur.

Detection through glass

  • Quartz glass generally attenuates more as the wavelength increases, and the radiation (absorption) increases.
    Detections are not possible through this type of glass because infrared is blocked by the glass.

Surrounding temperature change

  • A sudden change in ambient temperature (Ta) may cause a malfunction. Eliminate sudden ambient temperature changes as much as possible.

Outdoor use

  • In general, the sensors cannot function outdoors because of sunlight, temperature changes, and wind.

Ambient temperature

  • When the ambient temperature (Ta) is close to the temperature of human body and the temperature difference is small,
    detection becomes problematic. The sensitivity will be minimal at around 30°C including clothing.

Light effect

  • Malfunctions may occur if the sensor is exposed to direct sunlight or strong light such as car headlights.

Detection surface

  • If there is dirt, dust, or scratches on the detection surface window, the sensor may not work properly.
    Lightly wipe off dirt with a dry cloth. Do not use thinners or other organic solvents.

Startup time

  • It takes about 30 to 40 seconds for the sensor to operate stably after the power is applied.
    The output signal is disabled during the start-up output wait time so as not to output during that time.
    The sensor with the illumination outputs when the start-up output wait time has elapsed after the environment becomes dark.

Use environment

  • Do not use or store the sensor in places exposed to chemicals or corrosive gases, places where rapid temperature changes occur, places exposed to direct sunlight, or places exposed to vibration or shock.
    Also, if condensation or freezing occurs, the correct operation characteristics may not be obtained.
